Their are two large ski areas in the country, both located at Mount Ruapehu. Turoa and Whakapapa ski areas. Mt Ruapehu, along with Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaruhoe, which make up the Tongariro National Park, are located in the central region of the North Island of New Zealand.
Whakapapa Ski Area is located on the north western slopes of Mt Ruapehu and on a clear day has spectacular views across central North Island. Whakapapa is well known for its world class beginner facilities in Happy Valley. With 900 hectares of lift accessed skiable terrain. Also offers Ski/board lessons for all ages and skills.
Turoa Ski Area is located on the south western slopes and has stunning views out towards Mt Taranaki. Turoa is renowned for having New Zealand's best Terrain Park.
Both ski areas offer the latest rental ski equipment, workshop and ski tuning facilities, incl: snow school lessons for all ages and skills and full time terrain park and snowmaking.
